Marble speaks.

Out on the edge of the Roman Empire, an outcast, peasant Jewish girl named Maryam dreams of the world beyond her backwater village. Her solitude is broken only by a mysterious figure named Gabriel, who disappears and reappears unexpectedly, calling himself The Messenger. But when Maryam’s father dies and leaves behind debts that his only child must pay in servitude, she is thrust into the heart of the treacherous royal court of King Herod the Great and subject to the whims of his family, including her new mistress, the tempestuous Princess Herodias.

After a brutal act of jealousy and betrayal leaves Maryam alone in a country simmering with unrest, she sets out to salvage her future, only to be jarred by the discovery that she will soon become a mother.

Faced with secrets hidden in her family’s past, the looming threat of war, and a world harshest to women who reject the holds imposed upon them, Maryam decides to take her life into her own hands, and nothing -- not a princess, not an empire, not even an angel -- will stop her from seeing her own will be done.
